Gary Hackney with Dan Mitchell

Biography of Gary Hackney

Like many people of my generation that grew up in a rural area of the South, hunting and target shooting were a large part of my life. That love of shooting never left me, and somewhere along the way I developed a passion for beautiful wood.

Most of the stocks I build are for competitive shooters. I currently have many successful shooters using my stocks for Sporting Clays, Skeet, Trap, High School 4-H Trap, Columbaire and the live Pigeon rings. As I remain active in competitive shooting, I like to think of my self as a gunstock maker that understands the need of competitive shooters as I participate in all of these sports. I am Life Member of the NSSA and the NSCA and a member of the ATA. I shot serious competitive skeet for several years garnering one ALL American award, two All Zone awards, and made two or three All-State teams. One year I lead the nation in registered targets with something in excess of 22,000 targets shot. Today I mostly shoot Sporting Clays, but still shoot skeet, trap & pigeons occasionally.

Although I built my first stock in 1974, I had several custom stocks built for me in the late 80’s & early 90’s. As a result of this I experienced the many advantages a custom stock can provide, and I learned some of the problems in the process that need to be avoided. Having been a customer before I was a provider hopefully helps me understand my customers needs better.

While I specialize in the high-end target guns, I also build stocks for rifles and classic side by sides such as Parker, L.C. Smith, Fox, Ithaca, etc. There is a growing interest in shooting the wonderful old guns competitively. The dimensions on many of these fine old guns don’t accommodate many of today’s shooters and modifying the original may significantly reduce its value as a collectible item. An option these shooters have is to have a stock built to their dimensions, save the old stock; and if the need or desire to sell the gun as a collector’s piece ever arises the original wood can be put back on.
